Yes, USA Beach Volleyball is doing the Beach boys proud today.

USA Beach Volleyball will bring home the gold today, but by which California Girls rock star duo is yet to be determined.

August 8, 2012 at 1PM Pacific Time, the Olympic Gold Medal Match for beach volleyball will begin. But this year, it won’t be two countries battling it out for gold. Instead it will be USA vs. USA for the gold. The match is between the No. 3 Misty May-Treanor / Kerri Walsh against the No. 4 Jennifer Kessy / April Ross pair.

Not since 1996, when Sandra Pires and Jackie Silva from Brazil went against their own Brazilian teammates --Monica Rodrigues and Adriana Samuel has this happened where two women’s teams from the same country fought for the gold.

According to TeamUSA.org:

  • The last time the U.S. had two teams in the Olympic beach finals was at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta where Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes advanced as did the U.S. team of Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarsh. Kiraly and Steffes went on to win the gold.
  • The only time the U.S. has won more than one medal in an Olympic women’s beach volleyball tournament was in 2004 in Athens when May-Treanor and Walsh took the gold and the U.S. team of Elaine Youngs and Holly McPeak won the bronze.
